Everything You Need To Know About A Failed Septic System

by Mia Kuhn

When a septic system fails, it is an awful mess that you can see, smell, and hear. Anyone who has seen the movie, Meet the Parents, knows how gross it can be. Rewind a moment and start back at the beginning. Here's what you need to know about how a system fails and how you can prevent it.

What is a septic system?

Houses located within city limits are often connected to a municipal sewer system, where the local government processes everything. Houses that are further out in suburban or rural areas install their own septic system instead.

Most septic systems are composed of three parts: the plumbing in the house, the storage tank (often called a cesspool or a septic tank), and the drain field, or leach field. Waste is flushed out of the house to the storage tank. Over time, the solids sink to the bottom, and the water exits to the drain field where it is filtered before returning to the groundwater supply. The solids need to be pumped out of the tank on a regular basis, usually every three to five years, depending on usage and family size.

What are the signs that your septic system is failing?

When a system fails, it means that the tank and drain field overflow into the surrounding yard. There are several signs that your system is failing. You may hear a gurgling noise coming from your drains when you run water or flush the toilet. You will most definitely smell a very distinct smell when you are outside your home, particularly in the general area of the septic tank. When the system is overwhelmed, your yard will become flooded with water and solids that were forced from the tank.

What can when your system fails?

If you suspect a septic system failure, call the professionals right away, The sooner they can pump your overflowing tank, the better. If failure has already occurred, septic tank drain field repair is available to fix the problem. Depending on your personal situation, they may pump the tank, replace the tank, install an aerator, or even have to rebuild the drain field. The process may be time-consuming, but it is possible to repair a failed septic system.

You'll find pumping out your tank before a big, family event is a bad idea. Have your septic tank pump on a regular basis and call in the professionals at the first sign (or scent!) of trouble. Talk to a septic tank drainfield repair specialist at first sign of your tank needing to be pumped.
