4 Deck Design Ideas

by Mia Kuhn

Decks are greater places to relax in when the weather suits it. They make it easy to entertain guests especially if the space inside the house is not enough. Decks also add to the curb appeal of a house when done correctly. The best thing about decks is that there are many different ways that you can choose to go with the design. When well executed, the results are never disappointing.

1. Think in Levels

Having your deck all on one level is okay but you can achieve so much more when you go for a multi-level deck. A multi-level deck will allow you to have a railing that is lower. This means that people on the upper level will enjoy a view that isn't obstructed by the railing.

2. Built-In Planters

Plants can be a great addition to your deck and built-in planters ensure that you don't have to struggle to find a place for your plants. Some clever ideas feature planters that also form the backs of built-in benches.

If this design is used in a multi-level deck, the planters can be used to creatively hide the back of the benches which are on the lower level. Ensure there are holes at the bottom to drain excess water and prevent saturation when the rain comes.

3. A Privacy Wall

Some homes may have acres of space around, but some may be just a few feet away from the neighbors. You need a deck where you can spend some time without worrying about the neighbors watching you. A simple solution to this is to add a wall that's just high enough to keep out prying eyes. Ensure the design and color of the wall match the rest of the deck. You can also add built-in seating to the wall to make it more functional.

For a secure wall that will withstand strong winds, consider professional deck installation services.

4. Shade is Important

It's easy to enjoy a deck in spring, but when the hot summer sun shows up, it may not be so much fun anymore. There are many ways to add some shade to your deck such as:

  • Umbrellas

  • Awnings

  • Pergolas

  • Shade canopies

The shade can be a permanent fixture or something retractable. Pergolas are an excellent choice for a permanent fixture since they only offer partial shade. A retractable awning is a good solution when you need something that can be used or pushed aside as needed. For more information, contact a company like Hufnagel Landscaping Inc.
