You Need A WHAT For Pallet Racking? Little Surprises That Accompany Pallet Racking

by Mia Kuhn

Pallet racking, no matter where it is used, is a very convenient way of organizing and storing goods and products. As you are going along and constructing several pallet racks within your newly purchased warehouse, you might receive a surprise visit from a building inspector. He or she is going to ask for your pallet rack permit, and you are probably going to stare at him/her as though he/she has hornets coming out of his/her ears! In many cities, pallet rack permits are required. Here are some other things you may not know about assembling pallet racks in your warehouse.

Until You Have a Permit, You Will Have to Cease and Desist from Assembling Pallet Racks

Because pallet racks exceed a certain height, and it is possible to topple them and cause harm, they are considered "construction" under municipal law. Hence, the reason why you need a permit is so that you can continue your rack construction in your warehouse. Until you actually have the permit in hand, you are required to cease and desist from your pallet construction.

You Would Have to "Cease and Desist" for up to Four Weeks

Just when you were cruising along and getting everything ready on time, it comes to a full stop and remains dead in the water for weeks. Now, granted, some cities are a little faster on the draw, so you could get your permit in a week. However, you should expect a full month, just in case you need to inform your warehouse crew that it will be a long time before any of them get back to work.

You Need a Ton of Information to Accompany the Permit Application

This is not just a matter of turning in an application and fee. No, you will need CAD drawings of the warehouse and the position of the expected pallet racks, measurements of everything, facts on weight and load bearing for the racks you are using, etc.

Sure, it is all about public safety, but it is going to take a while to get all of the information together. You might want to tell the warehouse crew that it looks more like six to eight weeks before work can continue, since all of that documentation is going to take a week or two to assemble. That is just a fair estimate, without any other little surprises attached during the application process.
